Eyelid Surgery Can Create a Refreshed and Youthful Appearance
Over time, as the skin and muscles surrounding the eye weaken and stretch and excess fat accumulates around the eye area, the skin around the eyes begins to droop, wrinkle, and look worn out. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, can correct these unsightly affects of aging and, as a result, improve one's overall appearance and self-esteem. Blepharoplasty can correct sagging upper and lower eyelids, remove excess skin on the upper or lower eyelids, or improve the look of dark circles under the eyes.
Anyone who is unhappy with the appearance of his or her eyelids and in generally good health is a candidate for eyelid surgery. Also, blepharoplasty may be performed to remove excess skin which prevents the patient from fully opening his or her eyes and results in vision problems.
Benefits of eyelid surgery may be enhanced when the surgery is performed with other cosmetic surgeries such as a forehead lift or face lift surgery. Or, if the surgery is being performed to improve one's vision, a ptosis operation may be performed in conjunction with the eyelid surgery. Results of eyelid surgery are long-lasting, but it should be noted that undergoing the surgery does not prevent aging of the eyes and the skin around the eyes.
Eyelid surgery is usually performed on an out-patient basis. The patient typically receives a local anesthesia and an oral sedative for the operation. The operation lasts one to three hours. After eyelid surgery, one should expect to experience blurred vision, overproduction of tears, numbing, swelling, and bruising of the eye area. All of these side effects are temporary and mild. Severe complications are rare and include scarring and bleeding behind the eye. Incisions made during eyelid surgery are usually made in the natural crease of the eye. The incisions are not noticeable and fade in three to six months.
Insurance may cover the costs of eyelid surgery if it is performed to correct eyelid problems that interfere with the patient's sight. However, since eyelid surgery is typically performed as a voluntary, cosmetic procedure, insurance usually does not cover the costs of the operation.
