Tummy Tuck Surgery Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Common Questions
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a relatively common surgical cosmetic procedure that is performed on millions of patients every year. If you have loose and undesirable looking skin in your abdominal region, and have been unable to improve your tummy's appearance through diet and exercise, you may be a good candidate for the abdominoplasty procedure. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about abdominoplasty, to help determine whether this treatment is right for you.
How can I tell if I am a good candidate for a tummy tuck?
If you have abdominal skin that sags, an abdomen that is out of proportion to your other features or have excess fat deposits in the abdominal area, a tummy tuck can help you. In some cases, an abdominoplasty may be combined with liposuction for improved results. You will however, have to be in relatively good health and have no conditions that will inhibit the healing process or cause surgical complications.
Will I be given anesthesia?
Yes, you will. In some cases, the doctor may opt to use a simple local anesthetic, and you will be awake during the procedure. Depending on yours or the doctor's preferences, you may be given a sedative to help keep you relaxed. Other cosmetic surgeons prefer to use a general anesthesia so that you will be unconscious during the operation. Your doctor will discuss these choices with you, and help determine which method will work best for you.
How long will it take for me to heal?
Recovery time will vary from patient to patient. Immediately after your abdominoplasty you will experience bruising and swelling. Your tummy tuck surgery may be an outpatient procedure, or you may be required to stay in the hospital for a few days. Your activities will be extremely limited for the first week or so, and it will take several weeks for you to feel back to normal, and able to resume your normal day-to-day activities without any discomfort.
