NECK LIFT (PLATYSMAPLASTY)
A neck lift helps our patients when age, weight loss, or genetics leaves skin on the neck loose and hanging, sometimes resulting in a “turkey wattle” appearance. Though a neck lift is most commonly performed to counteract the effects of aging, the procedure can also help individuals who have excess skin following massive weight loss. Often, when loose, droopy skin around the neck is genetic, no amount of dieting and exercise will improve its look. Whatever the cause, a neck lift will tighten the skin around the neck, giving the area a sleeker, more attractive appearance.
Depending on the patient’s needs, the neck lift procedure may involve only liposuction or may require more extensive surgery. In most patients, the skin will tighten once excess neck fat is removed by gentle suction. However, liposuction will not lift sagging jowls, nor will it flatten folds of a “turkey wattle”. To correct these irregularities, Dr. Terracina makes a small incision in the neck under the chin and then tightens the underlying muscle with sutures so that the muscle returns to its normal sheet-like shape. Smoothing the contour of the neck results in a firmer, more youthful appearance.
